Perched high above the Orcia, Montalcino is well-known for its internationally-famed wine, Brunello. There are a number of wine cellars around the town from where you can taste and buy Brunello as well as another favourite, Rosso di Montalcino. The town also hosts the annual Jazz & Wine festival held in the second and third week of July.
Montelpulciano, set atop a narrow ridge of volcanic rock, also produces some of the region's finest wines including the highly reputed vino nobile. The views of the surrounding countryside are simply superb.
There are many travel companies who organize day tours to these towns. Take a tour and visit one of the vineyards, sample some wines and gain an insight into the techniques of viticulture.
In Montepulciano, most sights are concentrated around Piazza Grande, although the town's streets also house a wealth of fine buildings and churches
You can treat yourself to some wonderful musical events in the Fortezza. Otherwise both these towns are relatively quiet places to soak up the stunning views. In the evenings, the best entertainment is to walk around the old town enjoying a gelato. For a more exciting nightlife, you can go to Siena.
The nearest golf course is the Siena Golf Club Le Segalaie. The 18 holes golf club, located near the airport of Ampugnano, is surrounded by charming Tuscan hills and old farmhouses. Facilities here include pitching green, putting green, snack-bar, pro-shop, beach volley, and mini football.
