Sightseeing in Montaione

Praetorian Palace:

This 14th century Praetorian Palace boasts a prominent façade comprising a number of old municipal stone and glazed terracotta coats of arms. Inside there is the Civic Museum and the Historical Archive.

Church of San Regolo:

This important church was once dedicated to San Bartolommeo. It dates back to the 13th century and contains a 13th century valuable painting of Madonna with Child attributed to a follower of Cimabue.

Villa Da Filicaja:

About a kilometre away from the town, on the road to Gambassi, you will find Villa Da Filicaja. The villa, built on the site of the Roman Figline, was gifted to the 17th century poet Vincenzo da Filicaja by the Medici family along with a great deal of land and house in the town.

Roman Cistern:

The Roman Cistern dates back to the 2nd century BC. The cistern is 27 meters long and 3 wide and is divided into three rectangular sections. It could contain 400 cubic meters of water coming from the springs of Poggio all'Aglione.

San Vivaldo:

This is one of the most important monuments of Montaione. It is located near the monastery and is called the Holy Mount or Jerusalem of Tuscany. It a series of chapel and little temples, created by Father Tommaso of Florence and they represent the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.

Dining

Most of the restaurants and eateries can be found within the historic centre and in the surrounding countryside. You can savour some of the best Tuscan cuisine at its traditional best. Restaurants usually open 12.00 to14.30 hours for lunch, and 18.30 to 22.00 for dinner, but in the countryside they are likely to close earlier. Orders are usually taken 45 minutes before closing time.

Aside from the traditional Tuscan dishes, some of them also serve international menu, with sea food and other specialities with meat and game, together with excellent local wines (usually Chianti red wine or Tuscan white DOCG), produced in the nearby farmhouses.

Nightlife

The nightlife is relatively staid. You can enjoy leisurely drinks in the bars and clubs. Dinner usually spreads over two hours or more and is usually between 8 and 9 so by the time you finish, you just have time for a leisurely walk under the starlit sky.

The nearest golf club is the Castelfalfi Golf Club where you can enjoy a pleasant round of game under the Tuscan sun. This 18 holes Golf course (par 73) is considered amongst the most challenging golf courses in Italy because of the characteristics of the course.
