Lucca
Lucca, the only walled town in Italy, has much to offer its visitors. From the imposing 16th century Renaissance walls that protect the town to the scenic landscapes and endless beaches less than half an hour drive away, Lucca is an essential stop over on any Tuscan tour. The splendid Piazza San Michele has some great bar-cafes where you can enjoy a glass of local white wine or a gin and tonic and watch the people bicycle around the town. The other option is to try out the restaurants and eateries that dot Via Fillungo.
- Ristorante Bucadisantantonio: This restaurant, which was founded in 1782, has been patronized by famous personalities such as Giacomo Puccini, Ezra Pound, the King Gustavo of Sweden and many others. A must try here is the ricotta and leek pie with chickpea soup.
- Gli Orti da Via Elisa: The pizzas here are worth checking out. The restaurant is usually very crowded with locals and tourists. The menu changes regularly.
- Di Simo Caffe: The caffe was once patronized by Puccini. There is a grand bar here. The main attractions are the leafy salads, cakes and coffees.
