Arezzo

Arezzo is a charming city in Eastern Tuscany situated near the left bank of the River Arno. Heavily bombed during the Second World War, Arezzo is still home to some inspiring sights. It was here in Arezzo that part of Roberto Benigni's Oscar-winning film Life is Beautiful was filmed.

The main attraction in Arezzo is the highly reputed antique fair that attracts more than 500 exhibitors. The city's other claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of Renaissance poet Petrarch, who popularized the sonnet format.

  • Medieval Center: Arezzo's small medieval center houses the sloping Piazza Grande, the Pieve di Santa Maria and the beautiful frescos by Piero della Francesca.
  • Archeological Museum (Museo Archeológico Mecenate): The former Monastery of San Bernardo contains material of the Stone and Bronze Ages and the Etruscan and Roman periods. Notable items include the Etruscan vases and bronzes, fine decorated pottery, Etruscan terracotta reliefs, urns, sarcophagi, mirrors, and Roman mosaics.
  • Cathedral: The cathedral stands on the highest point of the hill It contains a number of notable works of art and stained-glass windows by Guillaume de Marcillat
  • Chiesa di San Francesco: The main attraction of the church is the choir chapel, with frescoes by Piero della Francesca, Legend of the True Cross.

Entertainment and Nightlife in Arezzo

Arezzo is a beautiful place to stroll through and spend a pleasant evening. Most of the city's bars, pubs and live music bars are concentrated around Piazza Grande, the lively heart town. Here you can go pub hoping, get a drink and listen to music, especially jazz music. For a more happening nightlife, people head off to nightclubs, most of which are located out of town.

Golf Club Casentino: This is the nearest golf club and is located around 35 kilometers from the city. Surroundings castles, Romanesque parishes, and old monasteries add a medieval touch to this beautiful golf course. The 18 hole, par 72 course is pleasantly undulating and covered with a wide variety of vegetation. There is a club house, which is set on the top of wide sloping terraces surrounded by woods. Facilities here include practice area, putting green, bar and restaurant.
